Often patients who come to our office would like to improve their smile.  The most common request from patients is to have their teeth whiter.  Whitening the teeth is a simple process which provides long term results.  The first step is to have an impression (a mold) of the teeth.  From this, a thin, flexible tray is custom made to fit your teeth.

Whitening Gel & Custom Trays

The whitening material is a thick gel which is dispensed from a plastic syringe.  The gel is a hydrogen peroxide derivative, (carbamide peroxide) & works by penetrating the tooth enamel and releasing oxygen to lighten the color of the teeth.  Only natural tooth structure will lighten, fillings or crowns will not change.
The difference between over-the-counter products and what is available only through our office is the concentration of the whitening gel, and the custom made tray, which is the key to getting the best results.  In order to get a good result, the whitening gel must be in contact w/ the tooth surface for a specified amount of time depending on the concentration of the gel, which can vary from  20%-30%.  It usually takes between 2-4 weeks to complete the whitening process.
